The Power of Thought in our Lives

As a Man Thinketh by James Allen

How Thought Creates Your Reality

James Allen (1864–1912) was a humble man of modest origins, who said what he thought and did what he said. Through his life and writings, he discovered a way to achieve happiness consistently, regardless of circumstances, by adhering to certain universal laws. These laws have been described by saints, mystics, and prophets throughout history. They are found in the Christian Bible, the Quran, the Vedas of Hinduism, and many other sacred texts. James Allen did not discover anything new—he simply became aware of how to use what was already available to all of us.

Allen’s education was cut short at the age of 15 when he had to leave school to support his family after the death of his father. Despite these hardships, he worked diligently and made the best of his circumstances. After uncovering the laws that govern reality, he devoted his life to applying them and teaching others how to do the same. He wrote 19 books in total, and although he did not receive fame or fortune in his lifetime, his works have inspired millions since his death.

I first encountered James Allen’s work when my father gave me his book As a Man Thinketh as I embarked on my own life journey. At the time, I didn’t fully grasp the concepts he discussed, but over the years, and after numerous readings, I began to develop a deeper understanding of what James Allen wanted to convey. I’d like to share that understanding with you, as it is something I practise in my own life. Of course, I’ll continue refining this understanding as the years progress, and I invite you to join me in exploring how our thoughts create and continually shape our reality.

Thought as Energy

Thought is an energy. Like electricity or magnetism, it is invisible, yet we know it exists because of its effects. Although electricity is still not fully understood, we rely on it for essential needs such as light and warmth. Similarly, thought can be harnessed by the mind to create specific effects. Scientists know how to channel electricity to produce heat and light, but few learn how to use the power of thought to create health, wealth, and happiness.

We all desire to be healthy, wealthy, and happy, yet no school curriculum teaches us how to achieve these things. Can you recall your very first thought? Or perhaps the first thought you had upon waking up? It’s a challenge to remember, and yet, we spend most of our lives immersed in thought. The only times we aren’t thinking are when we’re driving, arriving at our destination with no recollection of the journey, or when we are dozing or sleeping. Are you thinking when watching TV or a movie, or is your mind elsewhere? Surely you’ve experienced a moment of being jolted back to the present during a dull meeting or lesson. Have you ever found yourself stuck on the same page in a book, unable to remember what you’ve just read?

What if thought is an energy at our disposal? What if it could be moulded to create anything we want in life—but with one condition? In order to create, we must consciously choose to focus on thoughts about the things we desire. What if it were as simple as concentrating on a thought form to bring our desires into reality?

The Power of Thought

Consider this: How could a child who believes he is stupid ever become clever? How could a man remain poor if he constantly focuses on thoughts of wealth? How could a woman feel unloved if she dwells on thoughts of love and self-worth? Thoughts are like radio waves, surrounding us, with our mental states determining the frequencies we tune into. The happier we feel, the higher the vibrational thoughts we attract, feeding us even more joy. Conversely, the more miserable we feel, the more we attract thoughts of despair, which perpetuate negative emotions.

It is our initial choice of thought that sets the cycle in motion. Doesn’t it make sense, then, to be more mindful of the thoughts we allow ourselves to dwell on? We can choose the thoughts that foster the feelings we desire. The chair you are sitting on, for instance, began as a thought in someone’s mind. That person likely shared their idea, and over time, the energy invested in it led to its physical manifestation. This is not magic—it is a process. Once you understand how this process works, you can use it to create not only the emotions you wish to feel but even material possessions.

The Effort Behind Change

However, it is not enough to simply think about something in order to manifest it. If it were that simple, everyone would be living in a state of paradise. Effort is required—and that is often the obstacle that stands between us and the life we desire. Changing the habits and thought patterns of a lifetime requires effort. Even if you find yourself slipping back into negative thoughts, you still have the power to choose your thoughts, regardless of whether or not you believe it will work.

What do you have to lose? If you are struggling financially, for example, why not try imagining what it would feel like to be wealthy? If you don’t replace thoughts of poverty with thoughts of abundance, how will your reality ever change? You could begin by imagining the various ways in which wealth could enter your life. You could study the stories of people who have risen from adversity to success. You could use your imagination to shift your limiting beliefs, changing your internal dialogue to something like, “Every day, in every way, I am becoming happier and more prosperous. I am learning to love and accept myself more each day.”

Eventually, the walls of negativity that confine you will crumble, and you’ll rebuild your world into something brighter, healthier, and wealthier. Give it a try—what do you have to lose?

Conclusion

I would like to extend my gratitude to my father and to James Allen for introducing me to these life-changing principles. Through consistent practice and an open mind, I’ve come to realise that our thoughts are incredibly powerful, and they have the potential to shape the world around us. I encourage you to reflect on your own thoughts, and to begin the process of consciously choosing the ones that will help you create the life you truly desire.

Thank you, Dad, and thank you, James Allen.
